Interviews with Dr. J.M. van der Laan on WGLT about Goethe's Faust:
I always knew that I wanted to become a teacher. It was my passion and I didn’t really care what it was I was going to teach. I first thought I was going to teach English, and then I thought it would be biology. It did not take long for me to realize that if I wanted to succeed as a teacher, I needed disregard any concerns and follow my heart, and deepen my knowledge of the German language and culture.

Thanks to the generous gifts of German Alumni and other friends of the German program at ISU, the very first scholarships have been awarded to four new German majors. Founded in 2008, this scholarship is awarded annually to at least three new students who declare German as their major as they begin their studies at ISU.

A German 111 student was asked to tape a class so that one of his friends in Germany could see what an Introductory course on German would be like. We thought this would be fun to share. We use this video with thanks to and the kind permission of that student, Tyler Faivre.
There will be no film shown this Wednesday, 3 March, 2010. But films continue right after spring break. On Wednesday evening 17 March, we will watch "Die Welle." at 7.30 pm in Williams 307. "Die Welle" tells the story of a school teacher who undertakes a pedagogical experiment with the students: how does a dictatorship occur?
"Kaffeestunde" or Conversation Hour is open to all ISU students, faculty, and staff as well as the Bloomington/Normal community. Everyone is invited. Join us for informal conversation in German with occasional informal presentations every Wednesday from 4-5pm just off campus at The Coffeehouse in Uptown Normal (114 E. Beaufort).
We have several special events planned for this semester and will announce the time and place here on the German webpage. Among other plans, we will show the German films "Die Welle" and "Sonnenallee." These films are open to students enrolled in German courses and are part of the requirements for completion of those courses. What's more, we have several guests scheduled for informal presentations at Kaffeestunde throughout the semester. So far:
Mareike Tüllmann, teaching assistant from Germany, will talk about studying and student life at her home university in Paderborn.
Klaus Schmidt, Professor of Technology, talks about his professional connections with Germany from his "US" perspective.
Check here for other dates, special guests, and their topics.
New location! Students, professors, and members of the community meet every Friday afternoon at 4pm in Medici's iin Uptown Normal for a German "Stammtisch." Feel free to join us for pleasant conversations in German.
